Treasure

On the beach in Summer

British weather kept a cold grip on things

As we’d walk along

Your old metal detector humming

Sweeping over the sand

And seaweed

Over the pebbles

And empty shells

Looking for treasure

You’d walk ahead

Hiding coins below the surface

For me to find

And I’d pretend I didn’t notice

Pretend I was surprised

When the beep beep beep came

Pretend the coins were ancient

And I was the luckiest boy

On the beach in Summer
